About Smiles & Skills

Smiles & Skills is a free library of preschool learning material: 168 articles and 272 printable worksheets, coloring pages, tracing sheets and activity checklists for children aged 3 to 6. Everything downloads without a sign-up, an email address or a watermark.

Who writes this

The site is written by Alex Hope, a father based in London. It started as my own reading: I wanted to understand how a child learns to hold a pencil, why one three year old will sit with a worksheet and another will not, and what actually helps between the ages of three and six.

I am not a teacher and I am not a clinician, and nothing here is medical advice. What I do is read the research, take the questions I cannot answer to our pediatrician, and make the materials I could not find. On screen time I follow the published guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the World Health Organization and the US Department of Health and Human Services rather than my own opinion.

Every printable on the site is generated for it. None of them are collected from elsewhere, which is why they all share the same letter proportions, the same paper size and the same footer.

Spelling is American throughout, because most people reading this are in the United States. I am in London, so the occasional stray colour is my fault and I would be glad to be told about it.

The handwriting sheets are built to the same letter proportions a school uses, with the guide line set at the x-height and the tracing letters in Andika, a typeface designed for early readers. That detail matters more than it sounds: a worksheet with the wrong letter heights teaches a child to form letters incorrectly.

What you will find

Alphabet A to Z. A page for every letter: animals that start with it, Christmas words that start with it, and activities for teaching it, each with printables.

Activities. Hands-on ideas grouped by season, theme, and the skill they build, from cutting practice to counting.

Free printables. Every worksheet on the site in one filterable library.

How the printables may be used

Print them at home, in a classroom or in a nursery, as many copies as you need. Please do not host the files elsewhere or sell them. If you would like to share one, link to the page it came from.
