Cartoon witches and detailed scenes
The range here is wide. At one end are simple cartoon witches with a hat, a cloak and a friendly expression. At the other are full scenes with cauldrons, spell books, shelves of bottles and a cat somewhere in the corner. The simple ones take five minutes and the detailed ones can take an afternoon.
Both are useful, but for different reasons. The quick ones suit a child who wants to finish something. The detailed ones suit a child who wants somewhere to disappear into for a while.
Which design suits which age
Cartoon witches work from three: large shapes, thick lines, nothing intricate. The scenes with cauldrons and shelves suit six and up, because the small objects need a finer touch and there are simply more decisions to make.
What is in the cauldron
Ask your child what the potion does before they color it, then let the color follow the answer. A potion that makes you invisible probably is not bright orange. This is a small thing, but it is the difference between coloring a picture and telling a story with it, and children stay with the second one much longer.
