Pumpkins work well past October
A pumpkin is a fruit that grows on a vine, it starts green and turns orange as it ripens, and it is full of seeds. That makes these pages usable as an autumn nature activity rather than only a Halloween one, and several of the designs here have no carved face at all.
If you have carved a real one, keep the seeds, rinse them and let your child count them into groups of ten while they color. It is the easiest counting activity of the year because the child is genuinely curious how many there were.
Which design suits which age
The single jack-o-lanterns are large, rounded and simple, which suits three and up. The pumpkin patch scenes have vines, leaves and several pumpkins at different distances, so they suit six and up and take a good deal longer.
Faces and feelings
The carved faces are a surprisingly good way to talk about expressions. Ask whether the pumpkin looks happy, cross or surprised, and what makes you able to tell. Children who cannot yet name their own feelings will often name a pumpkin’s quite readily, and it is an easier conversation to start than asking them directly.
