What Day of the Dead is

Día de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday on the first and second of November when families remember relatives who have died. It is not a sad day and it is not a version of Halloween. Families build an altar at home, put out photographs and marigolds, cook the food the person liked, and tell stories about them. The skulls are decorated and bright on purpose, because the point is to remember someone warmly rather than to be frightened.

That is worth saying to a child before they start coloring, because a skull usually reads as scary to a four year old. Once they know it stands for someone being remembered, most children treat it as a pattern to fill in rather than a monster.

Which design suits which age

The sugar skull is dense, symmetrical pattern work: small petals, swirls and teardrop shapes. Children of seven and up tend to enjoy the detail, and it is genuinely good practice for pencil control. Below that age the small areas get frustrating, and a child will either scribble over them or give up.

The celebration scene has larger open areas, so it works for younger children. If you are printing for a preschooler, give them that one and let them use whatever colors they like. Marigold orange and deep pink are traditional, but nobody needs to be corrected on it.

Printing and paper

These print on A4 or US Letter without scaling. Ordinary copy paper is fine for crayon and colored pencil. If you are using felt tips, print on the heaviest paper your printer takes, or the ink bleeds through and marks whatever is underneath.
