1. Trace and write Y
A solid letter to copy, then dashed guides, then blank handwriting rules. Capital Y first, then lowercase y.
2. Find and color every Y
A grid of mixed letters with Y and y hidden through it. This builds recognition rather than handwriting, so it works before a child can write. Both cases appear. Plenty of children learn the capital and then do not recognize the lowercase.
3. Draw the Y words
Three boxes, yak, yarn, yo-yo, with the word to trace and room to draw it.
How to form the letter Y
Capital Y: Two slanted lines meeting in the middle, then a line down.
Lowercase y: A v shape, then a tail down below the baseline.
Say the movement out loud while your child writes. Naming the strokes does more than showing them.
Watch for: Lowercase y descends and is often floated on the line. It is also confused with v when the tail is missed.
What sound does Y make?
A y as in yak at the start, but a vowel at the end, as in happy and my. Teach the start sound only for now.
3 letter Y activities
1. Yarn Y
Glue yarn along a drawn Y.
You will need: Yarn, glue.
2. Yes and no
Ask silly questions; shout “yes” and stress the y sound.
You will need: Nothing.
3. Yo-yo tricks
Play with a yo-yo and say “y” on each throw.
You will need: Yo-yo.
