1. Trace and write W
A solid letter to copy, then dashed guides, then blank handwriting rules. Capital W first, then lowercase w.
2. Find and color every W
A grid of mixed letters with W and w hidden through it. This builds recognition rather than handwriting, so it works before a child can write. Both cases appear. Plenty of children learn the capital and then do not recognize the lowercase.
3. Draw the W words
Three boxes, water, worm, wheel, with the word to trace and room to draw it.
How to form the letter W
Capital W: Down, up, down, up, two Vs joined.
Lowercase w: The same, smaller.
Say the movement out loud while your child writes. Naming the strokes does more than showing them.
Watch for: w is m upside down and v doubled. Counting the points, two down for w, one for v, settles it.
What sound does W make?
Rounded lips, as in water. Silent in write and wrong.
3 letter W activities
