1. Trace and write Q
A solid letter to copy, then dashed guides, then blank handwriting rules. Capital Q first, then lowercase q.
2. Find and color every Q
A grid of mixed letters with Q and q hidden through it. This builds recognition rather than handwriting, so it works before a child can write. Both cases appear. Plenty of children learn the capital and then do not recognize the lowercase.
3. Draw the Q words
Three boxes, queen, quilt, quail, with the word to trace and room to draw it.
How to form the letter Q
Capital Q: A circle, then a short tail out at the bottom right.
Lowercase q: A circle, then a straight line down below the baseline.
Say the movement out loud while your child writes. Naming the strokes does more than showing them.
Watch for: q is p mirrored, and g also has a descender from a circle. q almost always travels with u, which is a useful thing to say early.
