1. Trace and write P
A solid letter to copy, then dashed guides, then blank handwriting rules. Capital P first, then lowercase p.
2. Find and color every P
A grid of mixed letters with P and p hidden through it. This builds recognition rather than handwriting, so it works before a child can write. Both cases appear. Plenty of children learn the capital and then do not recognize the lowercase.
3. Draw the P words
Three boxes, pig, pen, pear, with the word to trace and room to draw it.
How to form the letter P
Capital P: A line down, back to the top, then one curve out and in at the top half.
Lowercase p: A line down below the baseline, then a circle at the top right.
Say the movement out loud while your child writes. Naming the strokes does more than showing them.
Watch for: p and q are mirror images, and p and b differ only in whether the tail goes up or down. Naming the direction of the tail every time is what works.
