1. Trace and write R
A solid letter to copy, then dashed guides, then blank handwriting rules. Capital R first, then lowercase r.
2. Find and color every R
A grid of mixed letters with R and r hidden through it. This builds recognition rather than handwriting, so it works before a child can write. Both cases appear. Plenty of children learn the capital and then do not recognize the lowercase.
3. Draw the R words
Three boxes, rain, ring, rabbit, with the word to trace and room to draw it.
How to form the letter R
Capital R: A line down, back to the top, a curve out and in, then a slanted leg.
Lowercase r: A line down, back up, then a small shoulder curving right.
Say the movement out loud while your child writes. Naming the strokes does more than showing them.
Watch for: Lowercase r is often written as a v or an n. The shoulder should not close into a hump.
What sound does R make?
A growl, as in rain. Hard for many children until four or five, and worth not pushing.
