1. Trace and write Z
A solid letter to copy, then dashed guides, then blank handwriting rules. Capital Z first, then lowercase z.
2. Find and color every Z
A grid of mixed letters with Z and z hidden through it. This builds recognition rather than handwriting, so it works before a child can write. Both cases appear. Plenty of children learn the capital and then do not recognize the lowercase.
3. Draw the Z words
Three boxes, zip, zebra, zoo, with the word to trace and room to draw it.
How to form the letter Z
Capital Z: A bar across the top, a slant down to the left, then a bar across the bottom.
Lowercase z: The same, smaller.
Say the movement out loud while your child writes. Naming the strokes does more than showing them.
Watch for: Z reverses easily, becoming an S-like scribble or a mirrored zigzag. Counting the three strokes out loud helps.
What sound does Z make?
A buzz, as in zip. The same sound as s in dogs.
3 letter Z activities

Tape a zigzag on the floor and walk it.
You will need: Tape.
2. Zebra stripes
Paint black stripes on white paper.
You will need: Black paint.
3. Zoo sorting
Sort toy animals into a drawn zoo, naming each.
You will need: Toy animals.
