1. Trace and write B
A solid letter to copy, then dashed guides, then blank handwriting rules. Capital B first, then lowercase b.
2. Find and color every B
A grid of mixed letters with B and b hidden through it. This builds recognition rather than handwriting, so it works before a child can write. Both cases appear. Plenty of children learn the capital and then do not recognize the lowercase.
3. Draw the B words
Three boxes, ball, bear, boat, with the word to trace and room to draw it.
How to form the letter B
Capital B: A straight line down, back to the top, then two curves out and in.
Lowercase b: A straight line down first, then a circle on the right at the bottom.
Say the movement out loud while your child writes. Naming the strokes does more than showing them.
Watch for: b and d are the classic pair. Always start b with the tall line and d with the circle. Different first moves stop the reversal better than any reminder.
What sound does B make?
A hard b as in ball. Silent in comb and thumb, which is worth mentioning only once they read.
