1. Trace and write J
A solid letter to copy, then dashed guides, then blank handwriting rules. Capital J first, then lowercase j.
2. Find and color every J
A grid of mixed letters with J and j hidden through it. This builds recognition rather than handwriting, so it works before a child can write. Both cases appear. Plenty of children learn the capital and then do not recognize the lowercase.
3. Draw the J words
Three boxes, jam, jug, jet, with the word to trace and room to draw it.
How to form the letter J
Capital J: A line down that hooks left at the bottom.
Lowercase j: The same hook, with a dot above.
Say the movement out loud while your child writes. Naming the strokes does more than showing them.
Watch for: j and i are the only lowercase letters with dots, and j is the only one that both hooks and descends. Expect the hook to be missed.
What sound does J make?
A hard j as in jam. The same sound as soft g in giant.

3. Jug pouring
