Capital J: A line down that hooks left at the bottom.

Lowercase j: The same hook, with a dot above.

Say the movement out loud while your child writes. Naming the strokes does more than showing them.

Watch for: j and i are the only lowercase letters with dots, and j is the only one that both hooks and descends. Expect the hook to be missed.

1. Jam printing

Spread jam thinly on a plate and draw Js in it with a finger. Messy, and it works.

You will need: Jam, plate.

2. Jumping Js

Jump each time you hear a j word in a list you read out.

You will need: Nothing.

3. Jug pouring

Pour water between jugs, saying “j” on each pour. Good for coordination too.
